Brunel Special Stains Prepared Slides
BSPS Set1 This set of 12 preparations are stained by specialised techniques to show structures that cannot normally be seen by standard staining. The preparation of these slides is time consuming and requires technical skill and this is reflected in the price, however the set if very informative and good value. 1. Squamous epithelium from the surface of skin stained with silver to show the ‘joints’ anchoring the cells together. These are called desmosomes. 2. Skeletal muscle or ‘voluntary’ muscle has cross banding which is actually caused by the molecular structure that consists of protein plates that can slide in and out as the musclecontracts and relaxes. The section isstained with Hiedenhains Haematoxylin to show these striations. 3. The nerve cells of the brain and spinal chord have many fine and often long processes that interlink with one another. These are not easy to stain, but can be demonstrated with crystal violet in skilled hands. 4. Nerve cells particularly in the spinal chord can be extremely long and thin. The thin part of the cell is the axon and these can be seen by overlaying them with silver. 5. Muscles need to be stimulated by nerves before they can contract. Individual nerves join onto muscle fibres through nerve ending foot plates. They can be seen by overlaying them with silver nitrate then developing the image rather like a photography process. 6 A section of lung which has been injected to show its blood system. Stained with haematoxylin and injected with carmine. 7. A section of kidney injected to show its blood supply. Stained with haematoxylin and injected with carmine. 8. A section of testis stained with Hiedenhains Haematoxylin to show meosis in the spermatozoa production cycle. Hiedenhains Haematoxylin has a particular affinity for chromatin and the chromosomes show well. 9. A section of tongue showing taste buds and stained with Mallory’s Trichrome. This shows the difference between muscle and connective tissue. 10. A flatworm (planaria) wholemount injected with nigrosin (black) to show its digestive tract. 11. Segments of Tape Worm stained with toluidine blue to show internal structure. 12. Human blood smear stained with Leishmans stain to show red and white blood cells.
