1. Identification:

Flotation Fluid
is a mixture of Zinc Carbonate and Sodium Chloride in proportions to provide a solution with a specific gravity suitable for oocyte flotation techniques. Both substances have virtually identical hazard implications and the factors listed below apply to the mixture both as a powder and also a solution.

Supplier: Brunel Microscopes Ltd, Chippenham, SN14 6QA.

2. Hazard identification: Neither of the components of Flotation Fluid are considered hazardous by accidental contact, and only provides a hazard if ingested in particularly large amounts.

3. First aid measures: Eye contact - irrigate thoroughly with water
Inhalation - remove from exposure
Skin contact - wash thoroughly with soap and water
Ingestion - wash out mouth with water. If large amounts have been swallowed seek medical attention.

4. Fire fighting measures: Not applicable

5. Suitable extinguishing media: Not applicable

6. Handling and storage:
There are no specific recommendations. Best stored at room temperature and kept away from strong sunlight and in a dry place.

7. Accidental Release Measures: If local measures permit, mop up with plenty of water and run to waste, diluting with running water

8. Regulatory information: No UK exposure limits assigned

9. Ecological information: no environmental hazard providing the material is handled and disposed of in a sensible way.

10. Physical and chemical properties:
Boiling point - 1416 centigrade
Melting point - 801 centigrade
Physical state - white odourless solid
Solubility in water - very soluble

11. Toxicological information: After ingestion of large amounts: nausea and vomiting After eye contact - Irritation
No evidence of carcinogenic or mutagenic properties

12. Stability and Reactivity: Stable
