Mammalian Tumour Set - 15 slides

Biologic have produced a set of tumour sections from a variety of domestic animals and cattle. Tumours are basically swellings and can be non cancerous (non malignant) or cancerous (malignant). A brief description of each of the 15 slides in the set is listed below indicating whether they are cancer tumours or just benign (non cancer) swellings. The material is animal in origin and is virtually the same as human tissues much can be learnt about human tumours and their appearance from these sections.

The preparations are stained by Haematoxylin and Eosin and are of excellent quality and are very typical of each type of tumour. This set is unique to Brunel Microscopes and highly recommended for those with an interest in the pathology of cell structure.

1. Squamous cell carcinoma. This is a cancer tumour of skin. The outer layer of skin is formed from cells called squamous epithelium. In cancer tumours squamous epithelial cells reproduce at a very fast rate causing initially a swelling and then eventually - if not treated, cells will break away from the tumour and become lodged in other parts of the body and will form new tumours called secondary deposits. These often occur in lymph nodes.
2. Lung carcinoma. This is a cancer tumour which can start in the cells lining the air passages of the lungs - smokers beware!.
3. Lymphosarcoma of kidney. This is a cancer tumour of lymphocytes which are a type of white blood cell. If a cancer of these type of cells starts they can occur anywhere as lymphocytes occur anywhere in the body. This tumour has started in the kidney.
4. Ontogenic tumour (non cancer). This is a benign swelling of the cells which are very primitive in nature that can develop into other types of cells.
5. Benign mammary gland tumour. This is a non cancer swelling in the breast.
6. Cavernous haemangioma. This is a non cancer swelling of blood vessels. Because of this it is common that there are large spaces in the tumour - hence the term cavernous.
7. Foreign body granuloma. This is a non cancer swelling caused by an irritant getting under the skin. The bodies defence mechanisms react to it and a swelling forms. e.g. pine needles.
8. Malignant melanoma. A cancer tumour starting in the cells of the skin which produce the pigment responsible for skin colour. A very fast growing tumour. Sun worshippers beware!
9. Perianal gland adenoma. A non cancer tumour in the glands around the anus.
10. Mast cell tumour. A non cancer cell of mast cells which are cells which wander around the body tissues and are part of the bodies defence mechanism.
11. Sebaceous epithelioma. A non cancer tumour starting in the glands which secrete the oil at the base of hairs and are responsible for the “sheen” of healthy hair.
12. Hepatoid gland adenoma. A non cancer tumour of liver cells.
13. B cell lymphocytic lymphoma. A cancer tumour of a particular form of white blood cell. This is a type of leukemia.
14. Papilloma. A non cancer swelling of the epithelium cells which form the outside layer of skin. They can often occur in a number of sites and are small skin tags.
15. Apocrine adenoma. A non cancer tumour that starts in cells that secrete things and are often full of gelatinous or sometimes hard material.
