High Power or Compound Microscopes are used to view thin sections of objects such as plant and animal structures, or parts of objects such as insect legs, or objects which are themselves microscopic - such as pond life or blood cells. They do not have a depth of field and cannot be used for looking at whole objects. The magnification range usually begins at x40 and can go up to x1250.
Compound microscopes can be monocular (one eyepiece), binocular (two eyepieces), or even trinocular (three eyepieces - (the third one being for a camera). The binocular is recommended for those who intend doing a lot of microscopy work - to avoid eyestrain, and the trinocular for those wishing to take a lot of photographs (photographs can still be taken with the monocular or binocular forms, but you can’t look down them at the same time). Binocular and trinocular microscopes are of course more expensive. These types of microscope can only be used to view slide preparations, and specially prepared and stained slides can be purchased for beginners and complete slide making kits for the enthusiast who wants to prepare their own slides.
