Safety

Where appropriate the stains and chemicals supplied by Brunel Microscopes will be marked with the necessary hazard warning label. These are not designed to alarm unnecessarily but to inform and encourage respect for all substances that have the potential for harm if not used appropriately. Please read our general advise on safety and the specific Hazard Data Sheet (COSHH) for more detailed information for specific substances. A general explanation of the meaning of hazard warning labels is given below.

The black cross on an orange background shows that
the substance is harmful by inhalation, harmful If
swallowed, irritating to eyes and irritating to the
respiratory system.

The skull and crossbones shows a much higher
level of danger than “harmful”, and denotes substances
that are toxic by inhalation, toxic in contact with the skin
and toxic if swallowed.

This symbol warns that substances are corrosive, both
to humans and animals as well as substances. These
chemicals can cause burns to the skin or eyes, and they
will also burn the lining of the nose, throat and lungs If
breathed in.

The flame symbol on an orange background denotes
substances that are flammable. The vapours of these
chemicals will catch fire in the presence of a spark or

a flame.
